Title: Acknowledging My Diseases: White Privilege, Substance Use Disorder, and Recovery
Abstract: To challenge myself to examine my privilege to become a more effective social studies teacher for urban students, I explore my own story of addiction and the effects it has had on my understanding of my White identity. Using Milner’s framework for education researchers which suggests how they can become deliberately aware of their racial and cultural positionality, and Helms’ six statuses for the formation of White racial identity, I use autoethnography as a methodological tool to conduct this race-reflective research into myself.
