Pre-Revolutionary Colonial Town Meeting

town meeting simulation

Town Meeting is Thursday and Friday, September 23rd and 24th.  This simulation is of a colonial town meeting in which the students will act as if they were colonists. They will be assigned a historical figure that was either a Loyalist, Patriot, or Neutralist. Their job will be to argue their view points and persuade the neutralist to join their cause.  The neutralists job will be to ask questions that will help them determine which side to join.

Many of the historical figures that we will be using in class never actually met together. They were chosen to represent the variety and complex viewpoints on whether the colonies are to become independent or to remain with Britain. Some of the historical figures chosen never traveled to America.  Crispus Attucks died before 1776 in the "Boston Massacre".

Students will be assigned a historical character. They are to prepare the following materials for the town meeting: nameplates, propaganda, and key ideas. Students will be working in teams and will be conferring with teammates.  Their jobs are to convince the neutralists to join their side.

Adopted from Teachers' Curriculum Institute.
