Internships

Part of the reason that I chose to pursue my major at Ithaca College was because of its excellent intern program. During my time here, I have completed five credit hours of internships at four different locations, both local to Ithaca and abroad.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy

Thanks to the Emerson Summer Internship program, I was able to intern at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2013. RTC is a non-profit organization, dedicated to building a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines. As a development intern, I helped write, research and build web pages as references for trail developers. These web pages, like this one about trail lighting, gives trail developers access to the information and documents they need to both build their trail and educate their community. I also wrote summaries of legal documents, created datasets for trail-summary spreadsheets, updated contacted databases, and fell in love with biking while holding this position.

Island Press

Also in the summer of 2013, I was also able to intern at the non-profit nonfiction environmental publisher Island Press in Washington D.C. Again, this was thanks to the generosity of the Emerson Summer Internship program. At IP, I did a variety of editorial tasks and participated in editorial and decision-to-publish meetings. I read manuscripts and query letters, and responded with the appropriate rejection or review request. I organized meeting materials, sorted through videos, wrote catalog copy and copy-edited a manuscript. I also worked with author Tim Beatley on his upcoming book "Blue Urbanism" by curating and acquiring permissions for all the images in the book.

Tompkins County Public Library Foundation

TCPLF was my first internship back in the fall of 2012. As a development intern at this non-profit organization, I wrote thank you letters, helped plan and write materials for events and campaigns, and performed general administrative tasks. I also helped design and wrote copy for the organization's website.

Ithaca Times

I had one task at the Ithaca Times, and that was to copy edit about 70% of each of the weekly issues that came out in the spring of 2013. I used a combination of Ithaca Times house style and AP style.
