Video Project
Context:
This Video Project Assignment was created in the Spring Semester of 2008. This assignment was done for the class Integrating Media and Technology into Teaching (CI3750) through Appalachian State University's Off-Campus Program at the Hickory Metro Higher Education Center in Catawba County. Our professor for this class was Jeff Goodman, who gave me a lot of information on how to incorporate technology into my classroom. This assignment was done with a group of 5 people: Amanda Cox, Monica Setzer, Libby Teague, Michelle York, and myself. We all worked together to produce story boards, filming the project, and editing the project. We used a video camera for filming and IMovie software for the Mac computer to edit the software. The movie was filmed at ASU's campus in Boone, NC on a Saturday (in which it snowed).
Impact:
This assignment can be used as a lesson plan and will be helpful in my classroom in the future. The technology in this lesson incorporates using a video camera and computer software to edit the video, as well as creativity in planning a story. Our video was based on The Magic Flute, which was an opera by Mozart. This project will help students learn about creative writing and planning of a story. They will be able to make their own story based on something that they have chosen.
Alignment:
The following standards have been met with this assignment.
NETS-T I-B
I met this standard because the video project uses current and new technology. The current technology of a video camera, as well as new editing technology such as IMovie, as well as using a Mac computer. This allows teachers to stay abreast of technology.
NETS-T II-D
I will manage the equipment for this assignment, which is the video camera, by having groups of students share the video camera, so that each person in the group has a chance to use the camera. I will also have the students in upper grades who use the editing software, take turns so that everyone has a chance to edit part of the movie. In each group, as well as the entire class. Each student will also work together to create their storyboard and planning what they want their video to be like. In the younger grades, the video camera will need to be managed by the teacher and the story boards and planning will also need to be managed by the teacher.
NETS-T VI-B
I met this standard by allowing students to use not only reading to learn, but also hands-on and visual learning. This video assignment could help ELL students by giving them the option of drawing story boards and using their creativity which can be done in any language. Younger students will get to use their creativity (with some direction) in order to create their story.
NC DPI Standard 6, Indicator 1
I met this standard by using different parts of the arts to create this video. Brainstorming with children and creating the script in the lesson plan is a way of meeting this standard. Our group created the storyboards, the background for the movie, and the costumes for each of us to wear--we used art for these things. We used the music from the opera in the background of our video. We also had some dancing at the end of our video. Also, by planning how we filmed and the different techniques that we used, we helped to meet this standard.
NC DPI Standard 1, Indicator 5
I met this standard by understanding that with this assignment, students can learn meaning by using their existing knowledge of what they know about a certain topic and expanding on that knowledge. They will be able to take what they know and create their own story. They will take a book they already know something about and create a story board, which they will use to create their own movie. This will give them a better understanding what they are reading.
NC DPI Standard 12
I met this standard by knowing that I can use this project for students. They will be able to take a book that they like and create their own video, tying this into the arts. They will be able to use their own creativity in the arts with the video project.
