WebQuest is an online lesson for students.  The purpose is for the students to complete as much of the assignment using internet resources.  Below you will find the WebQuest that I created to help students have a  better understanding of the way rocks are formed. </FONT>

Geology Rock WebQuest

By: Carrie Seather

Grades 4-6

Work in groups of three.

Each must have access to a computer.

OH NO!!  Rosco, the rock collector has a problem.  Last year, Rosco’s geology teacher helped him categorize his rocks by how they were formed.  He had 3 sections: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.  Unfortunately, Rosco was just learning how to identify these rocks when his pet iguana knocked over his rock samples, mixing them up.  Now Rosco must sort them again.  He has called upon your group to help him sort his samples.  You will need to use the links provided to figure out what the difference is between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Materials:

  • Crossword puzzles (Get them from the teacher)
  • Question worksheet (Get them from the teacher)
  • Rock sample pictures
  • Sissors
  • Glue stick or paste
  • Pencil

Process:

  1. Complete the vocabulary crossword puzzle that relates to the rock type that you are researching.
  2. Retrieve question worksheet that relates to the rock type you are studying from your teacher.
  3. Your group will then come together and share the information with each other.
  4. You will collectively look at Rosco’s samples and begin sorting them.
  5. You will then need to create a chart to help Rosco in case his mischievous iguana knocks it over again.

Vocabulary

Complete the crossword puzzle for the type of rock that you are researching.  Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic.  Use the link below to Search for the words and definitions.

Vocabulary Words

Research

Next you will need to do a little research about the rock that you chose.  Complete the question worksheet, and fill out the answers, using the following websites.

Use this site to research Igneous rocks.

Use this site to research Sedimentary Rocks.

Use this site to research Metamorphic Rocks.

Compare Notes

Once you have each completed your vocabulary and question worksheet, you will share your information with your group.  Each of you should tell your group everything you learned about your rock type.  Then you should print the rock sample page and carefully cut out each picture.

Chart Your Finding

On a piece of paper, you will need to create a chart for Rosco.  He will need to use it to sort out the mess that his iguana made.  Create 3 sections on your page and label them: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.  Label each rock with the correct category and place it on the correct section of your chart.  Be careful, some of them may be tricky!  You can refer back to the websites if you need help.
