This section of the portfolio highlights several mathmatics projects. Included in the attatchments are a bookshare, a lesson plan, math center and a math applications worksheet for the iPad that all correspond with the first grade common core standards. Each assignment is intended for the use in the first grade.
This is a Common Core lesson plan for a first grade class in Groton that included the new Common Core curriculum. The students had been learning addition and this is a lesson that reinforces the topics that they have learned. The students use dice in this lesson to add and have manipulatives to help them with counting.
This is a math learning center that reinforces the math concept of adding that the have been practicing. This game is a competitve way for student to practice adding while playing a fun and interactive game.Using centers in the classroom allows students to explore and practice skills at their own pace and is a less traditional way of learning. Centers do not take the place of teaching but instead can enhance and review students learning. Centers are not tested, but rather give student independent practice of skills. In addition, math centers can be a motivational way for students to review math concepts or practice facts.
Apps are a great way for students to practice their school concepts while playing a fun and interactive game. I have chosen five math appications that also tie into the Common Core standards. Files attatched are a newsletter that can be sent home to parents explaining the apps, a document that explains how the apps correlate with the Common Core domains and standards and a rubric for the students to use to evaulate the apps.
Integrating literature into math class is a great way to address literacy in math, and it also incorporates the Common Core State Standards, into math lessons. It is also a way to present mathematics concepts in words rather than in numbers, allowing students with math anxiety to feel more comfortable. Children’s literature is a way of presenting a mathematical concept in a way that is meaningful to students. There are a variety of children's books that can be tied into any subject that make students wonder, use their imagination as well as their critical thinking skills. Books can go hand in hand with any lesson and can be a great visual way to explain a topic. The books that I chose are mathematical books that can be used for a variety of grades.
