Story Pictures Rationale
Context: In this lesson, I read "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss to my first grade class. Afterwards, I asked the students what they noticed about the words in the book (they rhyme), where those words that sound alike are found in the sentence (they are at the end of the sentence), and if they can name some rhyming words with a word I give them, and then they are to come up with rhyming words on their own. The students will ideally get on a computer of their own where they are given twelve different pictures of things that rhyme such as hair and chair, egg and leg, girl and pearl, ect. The students are asked to copy and paste pictures on the worksheet side-by-side that rhyme. Then the students will work on their word processing skills by typing the name of the picture underneath the picture. I worked a group of three made up of myself, Regan House, and Meghan McLaughlin. We used taskstream to build this lesson, as well as Microsoft Word to make the worksheet, and Adobe Photoshop to upload the pictures and then resize them before putting them into the worksheet. We each split up the pictures so that we ended up taking four different pictures on our own digital cameras and then uploaded them onto the computer, where they were uploaded to make the picture page of the worksheet.
Impact: I will use this to help me teach first grade Language Arts lessons on rhyming words, as well as computer lessons on copy and pasting, and word processing. I think that this is the first of many great lesson plans that it has helped me to make. I have made lots of lesson plans before, however I have never gone to the extent to make a complete lesson as I have for this Story Book Project. On this lesson I have had to take pictures and upload them to make worksheets, make actual lesson plans with questions to have discussion, and I have made webpages. Also, I have made lesson plans that have been integrated to incorporate a couple subjects, but this lesson covers lots of Language Arts Objectives, Health Objectives, and Computer/Technology Objectives. This way students have a fun way to learn many different subjects all at one time. Children who I will teach in a couple years will be much more knowledgeable about technology than anybody has ever been before; they will use computers for things that we cannot even begin to comprehend. Letting my students get a hands-on experience very early on in life, will help to build a basic knowledge of technology early on. Not only will this help my students, but it has helped me to work through some problems I had with technology, to help me make more effective lessons by making things such as webpages and worksheets.
Alignment:
-NETS-T VI-E - I will give my students equitable access to technology by allowing each student to work on their own computer, or if there is not enough computers for each student to have one, I will put them in pairs and have them divide their work equally so they each get the same amount of time on the computer, and will have a chance to practice all the same skills.
-NETS-T II-A - I will read a story, "Green Eggs and Ham" to the students so that they hear the rhyming words, then we will discuss them, and then we will have the students working on the computer so that they can copy and paste the pictures as well as type the names of the pictures so that the students will be practicing two different skills.
-NETS-T IV-C - Students will be asked to copy and paste pictures onto a worksheet that is on their computer as well as type the name of the pictures, and then print out a hard copy of their work, and then save their work in a folder.
-NETS-T IV-A - Students will be assessed by many different things such as their ability to copy and paste, word process, saving and printing.
-NETS- T VI-D - I will explain correct computer posture to the students for example, how to sit up straight with their wrists off the desk so that they will not develop carpal tunnel.
