Students are encouraged to make connections between what they learn in class and the world around them. Environmental Science lends itself to an indepth study of the world surrounding students and how they can create change. For field studies, students study their school campus in depth and map out the different plants around the school site and learn about the importance of native plant restoration. Many students were engaged in this activity and have continued to study the natural environment around them after completing the initial study. Furthermore, students are collecting data on waste around campus on an ongoing basis. Campus waste is an issue that effects all students and faculty at the site. Students are becoming conscious of the scale of the problem by collecting data and what it would take to make a difference.
Additionally, students are encouraged to make connections to issues off-campus. As new topics are introduced, students are assigned to find an article from any media source that covers the issue in a different area or a different perspective. Students find articles that are pertinent to the classroom topic and related to their own concerns. These articles are reviewed and presented in class.
