For over twenty years I have been the Future Educators Association (FEA) advisor to groups of passionate, dedicated students. The number of members has been fairly consistent over the years, but the level of commitment and involvement has increased since Teacher Cadet became a course. For the past two years the co-curricular activities have helped prepare students for competition. See the attached chart #1.
Club activities We have always celebrated education with American Education Week activities, encourage students with Read Across America activities, and honored teachers on National Teacher Appreciation Day. Over the years American Education Week grew into a five-day celebration of students, teachers, parents, staff, and the community. See the attached schedule and plans for 2011 (# 2 and 3). For Read for the Record and Read Across America, we go to nearby elementary schools with books and age-appropriate follow-up activities. See attached pictures (#4) National Teacher Appreciation Day now includes a morning news show appearance, writing a poem and the giving of a gift. See attached poem (#5).
In addition, I have taken students to National FEA Conferences for over twenty years. We have traveled across the United States and always competed in at least one event. I’ve sponsored National winners on multiple occasions for first place display, second place banner, first place scrapbook. and for the first time this year – first place Impromptu speaking, second place public service announcement and fourth place in the new Energy Day competition. See attached pictures (#6)
Virginia had its first State FEA Conference in 2011, after FEA became a national CTSO. Virginia will host competitions for the first time this year. I have nine students attending and we have entered seven competitions.
The real highlight of the trips to conferences is the students. In the past, I have had students fly for the first time, visit another part of the country for the first time, and take their first overnight trip with a high school group. Whenever we travel to a conference, we go a day early or stay a day later to experience the local area. This year our trip was only sixty miles to Baltimore, MD, so we rode the commuter train. I had two students with me who were riding the subway/train for the first time. The same two students had never been to Baltimore. And one of them had never stayed in a hotel. I am always glad to give up a weekend to provide new experiences for my students.
Although I have been the sponsor of the Future Educators Association (FEA) at Mount Vernon High School for seven years, it became an official co-curricular CTSO in July, 2010. The lessons taught in Teacher Cadet that are co-curricular include:

Although I have been the sponsor of the Future Educators Association (FEA) for seven years, it didn't become an official co-curricular CTSO until July, 2010. Our club attended the national conference all seven years. Over the years, we entered the essay, impromptu speaking and scrapbook competitions. We won 3rd place scrapbook in 2007, 2nd place in 2008 and first place in 2009. Then the scrapbook competition was discontinued.

I have been the Future Educators Association sponsor for seven years. Each year the club has five major community service projects:
In addition to these all club events, individual members provide child care for PTSA meetings and special events at nearby elementary schools - especially Woodley Hills. Students also mentor and/or tutor students at Riverside, Washington Mill, Woodlawn and Woodley Hills elementary schools and the Sacramento Neighborhood Center.
FEA members begin their professional career by volunteering and giving back to the local community.
